Long-term ramp closure scheduled for Frederick Boulevard on-ramp to I-264 west in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — Starting as early as Aug. 12, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to implement a temporary closure of the on-ramp from southbound Frederick Boulevard (Route 17) to Interstate 264 (I-264) west, to allow for ongoing noise wall construction activities adjacent to the roadway along I-264 in Portsmouth.

During the closure, a signed detour will be in place directing motorists traveling south on Frederick Boulevard to continue to Portsmouth Boulevard and follow posted detour signs to access the I-264 west on-ramp.

This ramp closure is estimated to remain in place through late 2026.

Additionally, the project will have an overnight off-ramp closure from I-264 east to Frederick Boulevard (exit 5) Aug. 10 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for pavement striping work.

All work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.

Before hitting the road, consider using VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT’s 511Virginia website and mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.
